BAFPS awarded RCSEng Grassroots in Surgery grant!
BAFPS is proud to have been awarded a Grassroots in Surgery grant by the Royal College of Surgeons England. The RCSEng Grassroots in Surgery scheme was developed to support surgeons, surgeons in training and other professionals who are actively trying to address Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in surgery. We are proud to be one of eight projects partnered and supported by the RCSEng.
The first RCSEng Grassroots BAFPS event was held on Saturday, 14th December 2024 , at the historic Lumley Library of the College and was a tremendous success!

Our second face to face workshop on research and audit was held on 14th June 2025 at the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

There is evidence of differential attainment in surgery, both for UK graduates and international graduates of different backgrounds
Our educational series aims to help some of the challenges facing colleagues in pursuing surgical careers. To this end our events over the next year will take on three themes.

Theme 1 -
Welcome to the NHS

The first theme of the series is to set the scene for doctors new to working in the health service through a face to face workshop.

We will explore NHS structures, training and non-training career pathways, portfolio building, and challenging scenarios and topics in the health service.

Theme 2 -
Interview prep

Mock CST interviews were held on 16th February 2025.
Candidates practiced clinical, management and portfolio questions and gained feedback from successful candidates.

Theme 3 -
Governance skills

Unsure how to get into research? Need to get your head around statistics? Unclear how to approach audit?
Is journal club or M+M daunting?

We will run a workshop on 14th June 2025, on how to build these aspects of your portfolio and career development.
